THE CHOUINARD SCHOOL OF ART 2008
In June 2006, the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks offered Chouinard the partnership to bring our art program to LA's urban areas using the City's recreation centers. By Fall 2007, we had piloted our program and had begun the first quarter to full classes at EXPO CENTER. By Winter 2008, we had 60 students, and now have over 250 signed up. The CHOUINARD AT LA REC AND PARKS SATURDAY ART SCHOOL is now rolling, offering high-quality art education to LA's youth, age 13-18.
THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS
As part of our agreement, the City provides Chouinard with space, materials, promotion, transportation, and assistants. This support allows us to affordably bring our program to the City's youth. To service the interest we are now seeing, Chouinard is opening its next site at Denker Rec Center and 10 new locations by 2010. The potential is nearly limitless.
THE PROGRAM - "Draw The Idea"
The basis of our program is - DRAWING. This was the strength of the original Chouinard, and we carry on the tradition. Our program consists of four 8-week quarters per year. In week 9, we take students on Artist Studio visits, whereby renowned Chouinard artists are visited, sharing their ideas as professional artists. Peter Shire was our first. Guy Dill, Otto Heino and many others will follow. In week 10, we take the students to museums and galleries, and to date, we have visited LACMA and the Norton Simon Museum.
HELP AN ART STUDENT THRIVE
Our program is designed to be HIGH CALIBER and AFFORDABLE at $40 per quarter. Chouinard hires the best artist/teachers we can find. The combination of this and our Artist Studio and Museum/Gallery visits provides an unparalleled art program for teens. As people active in the Art community, you know how a lack of funding has affected art education in our schools. Support from the community IS NEEDED, as Chouinard is responsible for paying teachers, staff, insurances, etc. Something effective CAN NOW BE DONE!
